desert detours

i was looking through kim miller's handbook for multisensory worship vol ii today and saw that there was a gathering where they actually laid out a tarp and dumped about fifty pounds of sand on the stage.

the meadow (green meadow umc in alcoa, tenn) filled the entire sanctuary with sand during lent this year.

we filled our sanctuary with hay for vacation bible school a couple weeks ago. what i'm saying is...let your imaginations run wild. we are quick to say, "the kids will love this," when it comes to planning vbs. the truth is: we love it too.

i'm not neccesarily suggesting the sand thing (i'm not discounting it either), but i am saying that it's time for us to get excited about the possibilities at the well. let your imaginations run wild.

Desert in abridged concordance (see my comments in paranthesis)

Dt. 32:10 He sustained him in a d land (Moses to the assembly)

Ps 78:17 against the Most High in the d (people of Israelites got 'bored' waiting for Moses to come down from the mt. and so they made golden calf idols...went back to old habits/sin)

Ps 106:14 and put God to the test in the d (NRSV uses wanton craving, wilderness again, this made me wonder about how we are drawn back to old ways/habits and if we were honest with ourselves what is it we get from X?)

Pro 21:19 it is better to live in a d land (than with a contentious wife? if we use this I think we should use SPOUSE :)

Is 35:6 the wilderness, and streams in the d (section title is The Return of the Redeemed to Zion) God comforts Zion, all the waste places will become like Eden a garden...joy, gladness, thanksgiving)

Is 40:3 make straight in the d a highway (preparing for God)

Mk 8:4 with bread here in th d ? (Feeding 4,000 great crowd, no food, no plan? 3 days with Jesus didn't want to send them home to faint on the way...how odd getting caught up with J. in the d with no food!)

Heb. 11:38 they wandered in d and mts. (early Xtn heroes plus suffering persecutions)

Now questions:
What would it take for me to believe that God can change my d into a garden? Why does this seem so impossible?
Reminded me of Las Vegas a city built in the d. and how in gardening you amend clay or sand with POOH! What does that say about our desert detours????

Other thoughts:
detours are like for: road construction, accidents, dangerous situations, something not good, known or unknown to drivers, sense that we take them in life without knowing, getting off the path

After J. was baptised he was led out into the wilderness to be tempted 40 days....Wesley's #46 sermon talks about expecting this in life after a HIGH expect a low/temptation to follow...(balance perhaps? reminds me of the need for prayerful reflection!)

Early Xtns. fled to the wilderness to escape persecution...to spend intense times of prayer, study, reflection and SOLITUDE.

What detours (good and bad) have I taken or do I need to take along the way/now?
How could I look back over my life and see detours in a new light?

I want to research desert flowers and animals who have ADAPTED!? What could they teach us?
